In international processing facilities, equipment imported from Europe (following PN16 standards) often connects to piping designed to American standards (ANSI Class 150). The multi-standard flange hole configuration allows maintenance teams and EPC contractors to mount the exact same expansion joint onto either standard without using expensive custom adapters or modifying pipe flanges.
Unlined rubber compounds like EPDM or NBR degrade, swell, or soften when exposed to aggressive industrial chemicals or organic solvents. The continuous PTFE inner liner acts as an impenetrable chemical barrier, ensuring process fluids only contact inert fluoroplastic while leaving the outer elastomeric body protected to perform its mechanical shock and vibration absorption duties.
No separate gaskets are needed. The internal PTFE liner extends completely through the throat and flares across the entire sealing face of the multi-standard backing flanges. This turned-over PTFE surface serves as its own full-coverage, chemical-resistant gasket, creating an immediate, leak-proof seal when torqued against mating flanges.
The composite unit is rated for continuous working pressures up to 16 bar (232 PSI / 1.6 MPa) with a robust anti-burst safety ratio. Controlled by the high-grade elastomeric backing, the continuous operating process temperature rating extends up to 115°C, accommodating the vast majority of hot chemical synthesis and transfer lines.
Control units (tie/limit rods) are strongly recommended for unanchored piping systems or high-pressure severe-service applications. Limit rods physically restrain the flexible bellows from over-extending beyond its engineered movement thresholds during sudden pressure surges or water hammer events, preventing pipe joint separation.
